Properties and benefits
- Sustainability - Birch species are relatively fast growing and support a myriad of varied wildlife, and where managed as a sustainable forest resource, do not impinge on the natural biodiversity. Additionally, the manufacturing process for plywood uses thin layers of wood, maximizing the yield from each log and reducing waste.
- Strength- One of the standout properties of birch plywood is its strength. Birch is a hardwood, and when layered together in plywood form, it provides a level of rigidity and durability that is hard to match. This strength makes it a go-to option for heavy-duty projects that require a robust material
- Desirable appearance- A growing trend in furniture and design is embracing the natural beauty of plywood by showcasing the exposed end grain. Traditionally, the edges of plywood were concealed with edge banding or veneer, but modern aesthetics favour the raw, layered look of the plywood’s cross-section. The visible end grain highlights the material’s unique structure, adding texture and a minimalist, industrial vibe to furniture and cabinetry. Designers are now incorporating this element as a statement feature, allowing the layered plys to stand out as a subtle yet striking design detail that celebrates the craftsmanship and material itself.
- Doesn’t need to be painted- Birch plywood also has a fine, even grain, which contributes to its smooth surface. This makes it an excellent choice for projects where the appearance of the material matters, such as furniture-making and interior finishes. It is often left unpainted or lightly stained to highlight its natural beauty.
Thicknesses and sizes
Birch plywood is available in various thicknesses to suit different applications, but one of the most common and standard thicknesses is 18mm. This thickness strikes a balance between sturdiness and ease of handling, making it ideal for constructing furniture, shelving, and other medium-duty projects.
As for sheet sizes, birch plywood is typically sold in large 8x4 foot (2440mm x 1220mm) sheets. These standard dimensions make it easy to work with for most construction and carpentry projects, as they can be cut down to the specific sizes required. Other thicknesses and sizes are available too, ranging from thinner 4mm sheets for lightweight applications to thicker options like 40mm for heavy-duty construction.
Applications and uses- The best Grade for your application
The versatility of birch plywood means that its applications are vast. It is commonly used in:
- Furniture making: Birch plywood's fine grain and strength make it perfect for crafting tables, chairs, bookshelves, and cabinets. Its ability to hold screws and nails securely also makes it ideal for constructing durable furniture pieces.
- Cabinetry: Because of its stability and resistance to warping, birch plywood is frequently used in kitchen and bathroom cabinets, where it provides a sleek, polished finish.
- Flooring and wall panelling: For those looking for a natural wood finish in their homes, birch plywood can be used as a cost-effective option for wall panelling and sub-flooring.
- Interior design: In modern interior design, birch plywood is often used for feature walls, minimalist décor, and built-in furniture due to its aesthetic appeal and clean lines.
- Carpentry and joinery: In custom woodwork projects, birch plywood is favoured because it can be easily shaped, sanded, and finished, lending itself to intricate design work.
Conclusions
Birch plywood is an excellent material for a variety of projects, from practical construction to decorative interior design. Its strength, stability, and smooth finish make it a top choice for furniture, cabinetry, and more. Available in standard thicknesses like 18mm and large 8x4 foot sheets, birch plywood offers flexibility for both large-scale and smaller DIY projects. Whether you're crafting custom furniture or designing a modern space, birch plywood is a reliable and attractive material that delivers lasting results.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Can my cut to size Birch ply panels be supplied with a lacquer finish?
A: Yes! We can finish your birch ply panels with a 10% clear lacquer- you can even select the edged you require to be finished out, and we will sand and prep them too.
Q: Does the appearance of Birch ply vary between the grades?
A: When it comes to Birch ply grades, we suggest using the higher grades such as S+/BB or B/BB for projects where you require one clear face to your panels. BB/BB grade boards may have plugs and other knots/ imperfections to both faces and so might not be suited to all projects.
Q: Do I need to finish the edges?
A: That all depends on whether you are using the Cutlist lacquer service- if so, we will do this for you on the edges you specify. If not, you will need to prep then seal the face and edges of your panels. This can be done with the lacquer or oil of your choosing.
