Why Edge? Discover our edging services and save time!
25 October 2024
Did you know we can offer edging services for nearly every sheet material that we offer? (except Ply and Coloured MDF, but if you use our lacquer service, we can sand edges for you)
Let’s have a look at the time saving benefits of using edge banding services:
Time-Saving Benefits of Edge Banding Sheet Materials
Reduced Finishing Work: Edge banding provides a clean, finished look right out of the box, eliminating the need for extensive sanding, painting, or sealing. This means less prep work and quicker project turnaround.
Minimized Assembly Time: Pre-edged materials can be assembled faster, as there’s no need to manually apply edge treatments during assembly. This streamlines the workflow, allowing for quicker construction of furniture or cabinetry.
Consistent Quality: Automated edge banding ensures uniformity across all pieces, reducing the time spent on quality control and rework. You’ll achieve a professional finish without the hassle of inconsistent manual applications.
Enhanced Durability: Banding helps protect the edges from moisture and damage, reducing the likelihood of repairs or replacements. This longevity translates to less time spent on maintenance over the lifespan of the project.
Less Cleanup: With edge banding, there’s less dust and debris from sanding and finishing, resulting in quicker cleanup times after the project is completed.
Edge banding availability
We offer a wide range of wood and ABS banding tapes, including various wood tapes to match all veneer species and ABS edge preparation tape for MDF edges. Various widths and thicknesses are available, along with a choice of square or radius edge.
Our solid wood edging is perfect for our veneer boards and offers a very easy and cost-effective option for lipping the board which would traditionally be a labour intensive job. Square edge or radius is available on solid wood edges in 1mm and 2mm. Our solid wood edging is lacquered after your boards have been edges if you choose our in-house lacquering service. Visit our Spray finishing page for information.
Along with the colours and solid wood tapes we also offer a few ways of preparing MDF end grain for paint. Many customers choose our consistent paintable ABS edge tape because it paints extremely well, although some makers prefer solid Maple edging to finish their MDF, because it is more natural and sustainable. Both options provide an excellent edge on MDF, and prepare the panel for paint. In summary, our edge banding service not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of cut to size panels but also significantly reduces labour time, making it a smart choice for efficient project management.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I choose 1mm and 2mm edge banding on my panels?
A: Yes, you have the choice of 1m or 2mm edging for most panel options. You can have 1mm square edge where the arris has been removed, or 2mm with either square or with a radius. The 2mm is very popular on most furniture as it is more durable and tactile.
Q: What edge banding do you use on MDF?
A: We typically use a paintable ABS edging which works well with most paints including water-based. A plastic-free alternative to ABS is to use Maple edge banding, it sands and paints very well.
Q: For edged MDF panels, will I see the edge banding joint under the paint on my panels?
A: No, the edge is finished seamlessly to the board so the joint is near-invisible. Tip; make sure you prepare your edge banding edges between paint coats for the best finish.
Q: Can I use water-based paint on ABS edge banded MDF?
A: Yes, our primer service only uses water-based primer and we have been very happy with the results. We also know ABS edging takes solvent based paints very well too, but we would always recommend testing a section of edging before cracking on and spraying your project, if you are unsure.
